What is the best way to remove a skin tag?

My baby was born with a skin tag right in the middle of his neck, how can we remove it safely?

When my son was born (1983) he had a skin tag on his face. Before my son left the hospital, the doctor gently tied a thread around the base of the skin tag, as close to the surface of my son’s face as possible. He tied it tightly enough to not fall off, but not so tight as to break the skin or hurt. Gradually, this cut off the blood supply to the skin tag. A few days later, the skin tag had started to shrivel, and the thread was loose. We took him in and the doctor removed the thread, and tied a new thread around the skin tag again. Eventually (1-2 weeks?) the skin tag fell off on its own. My son is now 22, and nobody can tell where the skin tag was!

My husband had a similar skin tag on his face too. After seeing how it worked for our son, he had me do the same on him. Within a couple of weeks, his skin tag fell off of his face too. So a doctor doesn’t neccesarily need to do it, but with an infant, it would probably be best to be safe.

DO NOT cut a skin tag, not with a razor or scissors or anything else. You have no way to know if there is a blood vessel or a nerve in there. All it takes is one blood vessel to cause bleeding, or one nerve to cause pain. Also, breaking the skin can easily lead to infection. You DO NOT want to be responsible for accidentally hurting your baby. Handling medical situations the wrong way could even lead to being investigated for neglect or abuse.
